Rollz-5 is a collections of circuits that create a kind of drum machine. Rollz (of which there are 5 circuits in total) generate organic, rhythmic pulses from geometric forms (each circuit is a kind of astable multivibrator). This Rollz pulse-brain circuitry is then hooked up to several 'translators' which filter ultrasonic pulses into audible rhythms. Each of these translators, Ultrasound Filters, Gongs, and AV Dogs, have variable and unique tuning options during construction, making for a personal and unique collections of bongs, hisses, fizzles, toms, bleeps, and groans.
Credit where it's due of course, this is an unofficial Peter Blasser/Ciat-Lonbarde build, the original paper circuit (and lots of other cool stuff) can be found here - www.ciat-lonbarde.net/paper/
I've transferred the original designs to PCB but, unsurprisingly, it's a big project to build with several sections that interconnect (it's truly modular though nothing to do with Eurorack). I'd only recommend this if you have some prior experience of soldering and building audio projects.
All materials, tools, and equipment will be provided.
The workshop will last 2 days. ~6 hours each days plus breaks and lunch but we'll keep things laid back so, if you're booking trains or anything, please give yourself a reasonable buffer.
We won't be assembling cases or anything like that but you'll take home a fully functioning synth ready to mount inside your own case.
The studio is on the 3rd floor and only accessible via stairs. Trafalgar Studios, Trafalgar Warehouse, 118 Trafalgar Street, Sheffield, S1 4JT.
Groups will be a maximum of 4 people. There'll be good ventilation and it would be better if participants do an LFT test before attending.
Booking tickets early is greatly appreciated (to help with ordering materials) but if you're worried about paying up-front, please email and we can try and make arrangements.
Feel free to ask questions.
